Susan Anton looks about the same today as she did when she made her debut in the 1970s. You would never have guessed that she was already in her forties when she appeared on Baywatch (1992-94), or that she's over sixty today. It should come as no surprise, then, that she got her start in the Miss America pageant, coming in as the second runner-up in 1969 after winning Miss Redlands and Miss California for that year.

Let Muriel Turn You On

Born October 12, 1950 in Oak Glen, California, attending San Bernadino Valley College after high school and getting her first taste of fame on the road to Miss America. The same year she came in second runner-up in that pageant, she made an appearance on the game show Password (1969), but it was her part on the Muriel Cigar commercials that first started to earn her a fanbase.

The commercials, debuting in 1976, served a double purpose for Anton, launching her as both an actress and a singer, with the memorable "Let Muriel turn you on" jingle. The ads kicked off a series of further commercial jobs and media appearances. She was on the Merv Griffin Show around thirty times, worked for Serta, and wound up landing her own variety show with country singer Mel Tillis, Mel and Susan Together (1978). By the end of the 1970s, Time Magazine had named her one of 1979's "Most Promising Faces."

In 1977 she made her big screen debut, but not in person. She provided the singing voice for Princess Elinore in Ralph Bakshi's cult indie-animation classic Wizards (1977). She would make her live action debut a couple years later in Goldengirl (1979). In 1980, Susan Anton had her own solo variety show, Presenting Susan Anton (1980). It was around this time that she began her relationship with Dudley Moore. The two were an interesting sight whenever they hit the town, with the media making much of their height difference, with the five foot eleven Anton standing eight and a half inches over her new boyfriend.

The 1980s were a busy time for Anton as she appeared in Cannonball Run II (1984), Making Mr. Right (1987), Spring Fever (1982), The Love Boat (1982) as Leslie Webb in a two-part episode, Murder, She Wrote (Christine Clifford), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1988) and It's Garry Shandling's Show (1987) as herself. She also released her first single in 1980, "Killin' Time" (1980), peaking at number ten on the US country charts and 28 overall.

Staying Ageless

By the end of the 1980s, it was beginning to look like Susan Anton was never going to age, and over the 1990s she proved it. She appeared on a number of TV shows in this time including Night Court (1990), Quantum Leap (1990), Blossom (1991), The Ben Stiller Show (1992), and of course, Baywatch (1992-94), perhaps her biggest role of the decade, appearing as Jackie Quinn in thirteen episodes. She also reunited with Gary Shandling for The Larry Sanders Show (1993), playing herself as a guest on the fictional talk show.

During her time in Las Vegas hosting the Great Radio City Music Hall Spectacular at the Flamingo Hilton, she would host more than five thousand shows, finally ending her run in 2000. On stage she's also featured in productions of Hairspray, All Shook Up, and The Will Rogers Follies, showcasing her stage-acting abilities both on and off Broadway.

She has remained busy since then, as well, appearing as herself on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (2006), featuring on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2010), and showing up in Sharknado: The 4th Awakens (2016). Even today when you see Susan Anton on TV, you couldn't be blamed for wondering who this beautiful young newcomer is and what she'll do next.

In 1992, Susan Anton married Jeff Lester, an actor and executive producer featured in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), and an episode of Seinfeld (1991) where he played George Costanza's masseuse. He works today primarily as a producer of television commercials, stage and film. The two have remained married ever since.

Since first debuting in the 1970s, Susan Anton has remained one of the most beautiful working actresses in Hollywood, seemingly unable to age, and carrying the same vibrant, enchanting energy that made her a star when she was selling Muriel cigars.

"Sometimes because a woman is beautiful, she's not encouraged to be more, although she may have so much more to offer."
