The 1980s saw the rise of a number of artists who were not exactly one-hit-wonders, but were just the right performer at just the right time and in just the right place. They might not have reinvented themselves into the nineties like Madonna, they might not have had the staying power of Prince, but they had their time in the spotlight and they made the most of it. Samantha Fox may have been one of the very sexiest of these 80s pop stars.

"I consider myself sexy. But the sexy image doesn't bother me, and I don't think it detracts from my singing."

The Star To Be

Samantha Fox was borng on April 15, 1966 in London to Carole Wilken, and father John Patrick Fox. Although Carole Wilken was an actress, the family's income largely came from market trading. Before she was even out of Catholic School she knew she wanted to be a star someday. She started to appear in school plays at just three years old, and at fourteen had formed a pop band with friends from school. The band was a massive success, seeing as she got her first recording contract at just sixteen years old

"I always wanted it, the fame. When it came, I didn't want to let it go."

The record deal resulted in Fox's first single, "Rockin' With My Radio" (1983), with production by Ray Fenwick, followed by another collaboration on "Aim to Win" (1984). Around this time, Fox's mother was busy getting her daughter started in modeling, sending her photographs to the Girl of the Year modeling contest held by the Sunday People newspaper. Samantha didn't come in first, but coming in second out of twenty thousand entrants isn't a bad deal, and she was soon posing for The Sun's famous "Page 3" feature. This would help to make her one of the most popular pin-up girls of the 1980s, winning the Page 3 Girl of the Year Award in 1984, 85 and 86.

At twenty years old, Samantha decided to hang up her modeling hat and focus exclusively on her music for awhile, although she did reunite with The Sun for a 25th Anniversary Page 3 appearance in 1995, with fan-demand resulting in further appearances after that.

Debut Album

In 1986 Samantha Fox followed her string of successful singles with her debut album, Touch Me (1986). The album earned a Silver record from the British Phonographic Industry, hitting Number 17 in the UK, 20 in Australia, 24 in the US, and number one in Finland. The titular single was a smash hit, hitting number one in Australia, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, and reaching the top five in the UK, the US, and a number of European countries. Other singles from the album like "Do Ya Do Ya" also reached the top twenty. Her next album, Samantha Fox (1987), won a Gold record from the National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing, but ultimately peaked outside of the top ten in every country besides Finland, Norway and Switzerland. Her third album, I Wanna Have Some Fun (1988), failed to chart in many of the countries that had once gone crazy for every new Samantha Fox album, peaking at 46 in the UK, 37 in the US, and coming in all the way down at 151 in Australia. Though she has continued to record new music since then, her hottest seller since the 1980s, Angel with an Attitude (2005), peaked at 476 in Australia.

In the 1980s, that was just the way it went sometimes. Artists like Samantha Fox perfectly captured what it meant to be young at that time, but the public was a little less interested in watching them grow than in simply celebrating their brief youth.

That is not to say that she disappeared off of the face of the Earth, or anything. In 1990 she landed a spot on Charles in Charge (1990) as rock star Samantha Steele, and acted in the films It's Been Real (1990) and The Match (1990). She was also featured on the 2008 season of Celebrity Wife Swap with partner Myra Stratton, and the 2016 season of Celebrity Big Brother.

In a way it's almost a blessing to forever be the 80s girl. Where other artists stay in the spotlight as they grow older, Samantha Fox gets to enjoy having her image captured in a perfect snapshot of the 1980s, ageless and everlasting.

"As a kid, I dreamed of being a pop star, a glamorous woman and traveling the world. And I've done that all my life."
