Released in 2000, “American Psycho” was highly praised by critics and has gained a cult following. The film carried a $7 budget while pulling in $34.3 million at the box office, and the main character of Patrick Bateman became one of Christian Bale’s most memorable characters. To get into the character, Bale channeled a fellow actor.
It turns out that to play Bateman, Bale acted like Tom Cruise. “It was definitely a process,” director Mary Harron said of how Bateman found inspiration for the character. “(Bale and I) talked a lot, but he was in L.A. and I was in New York. We didn’t actually meet in person a lot, just talked on the phone.”
“We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave,” she continued. “And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.”
