Movie marketing is much more than just commercials on television, YouTube trailers and print or billboard ads. There’s a lot of marketing material that goes into getting the public to see your movie. Toys, especially if you’re making a movie that’s aimed at children or stars a bunch of superheroes is a popular way to go. Then, there are some items that seem like they’d be better suited for a Happy Meal that ends up at the cheap table of a garage sale. There’s also some expensive marketing items that have been downright strange.
“The Fantastic Mr. Fox” was a fine film with George Clooney voicing the title character, but some of the promotional material was strange. This included a fuzzy tie that resembled a fox tail. You might be able to wear it while lugging around your paint can of unpopped popcorn from Clooney’s friend Matt Damon when that was a promotional tool for “The Informant!”
Or perhaps you’re more of a fan of some of the biggest blockbusters of all-time. The massive hit “Titanic” has a strong following, with plenty of shirts and hats available. On top of that, though, you can even find an official “Titanic” boat whistle, or go a little classier with some cuff-links. Another blockbuster, “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade”, also had some memorable items. This included a fanny pack that was cross promoted with Pepsi, which included a handheld AM/FM radio and some dated sunglasses.
Maybe comedies are more of your thing. “Tropic Thunder” ended up being a huge hit, starring Ben Still, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. The film also featured a character named Alpa Chino, played by Brandon T. Jackson. The character in the film marketed his energy drink that was affectionately known as “Booty Sweat”, which ended up becoming a real thing in the marketing process.
Movie marketers will pretty much do anything they can to get people to see their movies. Some ideas are hits, while others are quite silly, as you can see. If you’re lucky enough to get to screen a movie before it comes out, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up with some of this swag, as well.
