If you were to ask fans of the “Game of Thrones” series who their favorite character is, there’s a good chance that the answer is going to be Jon Snow. At the beginning of the series, Snow was a main part of the cast, but has only seen his prominence rise throughout the program to become the leading star. It’s helped to put the actor that plays him, Kit Harington, on the map after he had never held a role like this before. Now that “Game of Thrones” is coming to an end, Harington figures to still be very busy with acting work now that everybody knows his name.Advertisements:

Harington comes from a line of those that have worked in stage acting, with his mother writing her own plays while he was growing up. Harington himself was born in London, England on December 26, 1986 as Christopher, but has always went by the nickname that many now know him by. Harington hadn’t gotten involved in acting at a very early age, waiting until his teenage years to get on stage for the first time. Once he had graduated from school, Harington focused on acting primarily as he attended drama classes in college, helping him to land his first roles on stage.

Harington’s first prominent work on stage came when he played Albert Narracott in the production of “War Horse” starting in 2008 at the Royal National Theatre in London. This helped him to stand out, and he followed it up with a role in “Posh”. It was clear that Harington was a talented actor on stage, gaining himself years of experience before turning his attention to something more mainstream.

Interestingly enough, Harington had never appeared on television leading up to 2010. Then, he’d audition for a show that would end up taking off in the form of “Game of Thrones” where he tried out for the role of Jon Snow. The audition didn’t go too swimmingly at first as Harington had actually gotten into a fight at a McDonald’s restaurant the night before. When he showed up to the set to try and become Jon Snow, Harington had a black eye.

Thankfully for Harington, he blew the audition out of the water according to the casting director. “I’m afraid I don’t recall his black eye,” she said. “All I remember is that he was really, really mind-blowingly good.” The director had previously seen Harington’s work on stage and that’s what was able to land him the audition and also get a leg up on the competition. Of course, Snow would be one of the main characters in the “Game of Thrones” franchise.

For the most part, the storyline revolving around Snow resembles that from the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series of novels by George R.R. Martin. Harington has been playing the Snow character since the beginning of the series, becoming a massive fan favorite. For his work, Harington has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, which came as a surprise to Harington himself. “Stunned” was the term he used upon hearing that he was nominated, adding that it was “an emotional moment” and he was incredibly humbled. Though he didn’t win, Harington has received plenty of recognition in other awards shows and is frequently ranked as the fans’ favorite character on the show.

Just like he had never been on television before “Game of Thrones”, Harington had also never been in a movie. A year after making his debut as Jon Snow, Harington landed a leading role in the film “Silent Hill: Revelation” based off of the famous video game franchise. Since then, he’s appeared in quite a few films. In 2014 alone, Harington starred in the films “Pompeii”, “Testament of Youth” and entered the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise.

The “Dragon” series is one that Harington has revisited most recently, appearing in 2019’s “The Hidden World”. Other recent film roles for the actor include “Brimstone” and “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan”. “Game of Thrones” has also helped Harington to land some other television roles, starring in a pair of TV films while also having a recurring role on “Gunpowder” where he was also a producer and helped to create the show. It doesn’t mean his theatrical career is over, either, as he’s been part of three stage productions since becoming Jon Snow.

It’s been a long ride for Harington as Jon Snow, a character that he’s come to know for a decade now. When 2019 signaled the final year of the series, Harington said that “Everyone was broken at the end” of filming. “I don’t know if we were crying because we were sad it was ending or if we were crying because it was so f***ing tiring. We were sleep deprived,” he added. “I remember everyone walking around towards the end going, ‘I’ve had enough now. I love this, it’s been the best thing in my life, I’ll miss it one day, but I’m done.’”

In fact, the character is certainly something that Harington is likely to miss. “It’s just been this amazing journey,” he said. “I kinda said to them on my wrap speech that it’s always been more than a job. They were a family and it was my life. I’ve loved every minute of it...I’ve been quite emotional thinking about having finished it.” Thankfully for Harington, the work that he’s done on the show has certainly opened up a lot of career opportunities both now and down the road.
